The short answer
Surfer and Semrush are not really rivals. Surfer helps you write and improve individual pages, and its Standard plan also tracks how you appear in ChatGPT answers. Semrush is an SEO suite for keyword research, competitor analysis, daily rank tracking and site audits. SE Ranking is a cheaper all-in-one alternative to Semrush.
- Your pages need work → Surfer.
- You need research and ranking data → Semrush, or SE Ranking on a tighter budget.
- New site with little traffic → start with free Google Search Console and pay for nothing yet.
The short answer: they do different jobs
Most comparisons line these tools up as competitors and pick a winner. A more useful question is: what job is holding your site back right now?
- Surfer is a content optimisation tool. It helps you write or improve a specific page so it covers what search engines expect for that topic. On its Standard plan, it also tracks how you show up in ChatGPT answers.
- Semrush is an SEO suite. It finds keywords, shows what competitors rank for, tracks your positions daily and audits your site for problems.
- SE Ranking is a cheaper all-in-one. It overlaps mostly with Semrush, not with Surfer.
Many small sites need only one of these. Some need none yet.

What Surfer does well, and where it stops
Surfer is built around one task: making a single page as complete and relevant as it can be for its topic. A typical workflow looks like this:
- Pick the topic or search phrase the page should rank for.
- Draft the text in Surfer, or paste in an existing page.
- Follow the content guidance on what the page should cover.
- Publish the new page or update the old one.
The unit of usage is a document. Each page you work on uses one, so your plan's document allowance sets how many pages you can create or improve. Discovery includes 120 documents and 10 tracked pages. Standard, at €99/month billed yearly, includes 360 documents.
What Standard adds
Standard adds two things a small business may care about. It tracks 25 AI prompts weekly in ChatGPT, so you can see whether your brand appears in AI answers. It also integrates with WordPress and Google Docs, which saves copying text back and forth.
Higher tiers exist: Pro is listed at €182 and Peace of Mind at €299. Compare their features on surfer.ai/pricing if you outgrow Standard.
Where Surfer stops
Surfer is built for the page in front of you, not the wider market. It is not designed to show you the full keyword landscape, your competitors' backlinks, or daily rankings across hundreds of keywords. Nor does it aim to run the broad technical site audits that an SEO suite does.
If your real problem is drafting rather than optimising, a general writing assistant may serve you better. See our guide on how to choose an AI writing assistant for a small business.
Whatever the optimisation guidance suggests, keep your own voice; a brand voice guide for AI writing tools helps here. Ecommerce owners can pair page optimisation with our product description workflow.
Surfer: pros and cons for a small business
Pros
- Focused on one clear task: writing better pages
- Lowest entry price of the three on yearly billing
- AI-search prompt tracking in ChatGPT on Standard
- WordPress and Google Docs integrations on Standard
Cons
- Annual plans are paid upfront
- Usage is capped by documents
- Not a replacement for keyword research or rank tracking
- Following its guidance does not guarantee rankings
What Semrush does well, and where it stops
Semrush is the tool you open when you need data about the market around your site. Its main uses are:
- Keyword research: finding what people search for in your area.
- Competitor analysis: seeing which searches your competitors rank for.
- Rank tracking: checking your positions daily.
- Site audits: flagging technical problems on your site.
Semrush plans and seats
The SEO plan covers 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily. Pro+ is listed at €286 and raises this to 15 websites and 1,500 keywords. A Starter tier is also listed at €190; check its exact inclusions on semrush.com/prices before assuming it fits.
Extra users cost from €43/month each. For a team of three, the two extra seats add at least €86/month on top of the base plan.
Where Semrush stops
Semrush is a large toolset. A solo owner who mainly wants to fix a handful of pages may pay for far more than they use. Its core strength is research and tracking data; turning that data into a good page is still your job.
You can find out whether it fits before paying. The free plan allows 10 reports per day, and paid plans have a 7-day free trial.
Semrush: pros and cons for a small business
Pros
- Broad research and competitor data in one place
- Daily rank tracking
- Free plan and 7-day trial to try it first
Cons
- Highest entry price of the three
- Extra users cost from €43/month each
- Can overwhelm non-specialists
- Does not replace careful writing
SE Ranking: the cheaper all-in-one alternative
If you like what Semrush does but not the price, SE Ranking is the obvious alternative to check. It covers much of the same ground: keyword research, rank tracking and site audits.
Core costs €109/month, or €87.20/month billed yearly. It includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily and 1 seat. Growth is listed at €235/month for larger needs.
On paper, Core tracks more keywords and more projects than Semrush's SEO plan, at a lower price. Paper limits are not the whole story, though. What matters is whether its data covers your market and your competitors well enough, and you can only judge that on your own site.
The 14-day free trial needs no card, which makes SE Ranking a low-risk first test. Use it to check results for the keywords and competitors you actually care about.
Who needs neither yet: start with Google Search Console
If your site is new, gets little traffic, or publishes a few pages a month, paid SEO tools often outrun your needs. You would be paying for data you cannot act on yet.
Google Search Console is free. It shows:
- The search queries you already appear for
- Your clicks and impressions for each query
- Indexing problems that stop pages showing up
- Which pages perform best
A simple monthly routine is enough for many small sites. Open the Performance report, sort by impressions, and look for pages that are seen but rarely clicked. To take routine checks like this off your plate, see our guide to automating repetitive admin tasks without code.
Signs you have outgrown Search Console
- You need to see what competitors rank for.
- You want to track many keywords daily, not just review past queries.
- You publish regularly at volume and need help planning topics.
- You keep improving pages but cannot tell what is missing from them.
The first three point to Semrush or SE Ranking. The last one points to Surfer.
Do you need Surfer and Semrush together?
They do complement each other. Research finds the topics; optimisation improves the page.
For a small business, though, the combined cost is significant. At entry level on yearly billing, Surfer Discovery (€49) plus Semrush SEO (€112.52) comes to €161.52 per month, before extra users and tax. Billing also differs: Surfer charges its year upfront, while Semrush offers both monthly and yearly options.
Cheaper ways to cover both jobs:
- Free research plus paid writing help: Search Console or Semrush's free plan for research, and Surfer for writing.
- One suite only: SE Ranking alone, if writing guidance is not your bottleneck.
If you mainly draft with a general chatbot before optimising, our comparison of ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for small business writing covers that step.
Whichever combination you consider, run trials one at a time. Overlapping trials make it hard to tell which tool actually helped.
How to trial before you commit
- Write down the one job you need done. For example, "find 20 topics competitors rank for" or "improve our five weakest service pages." Judge every tool against that job only.
- Start with the free or no-card options. Use Semrush's free plan or 7-day trial, or SE Ranking's 14-day no-card trial. Run them on your own site plus 2-3 competitors.
- Check Surfer's terms before paying. Its smallest plan is billed yearly upfront, so read the trial, billing and refund terms on its pricing page first.
- Set a cancel reminder on day one. Put it in your calendar a couple of days before the trial ends.
- Check the currency and VAT at checkout. The price on a pricing page may differ by region and may not include tax.
Which should you choose?
Quick decision
- New site, little trafficGoogle Search Console only, for now.
- You write content but don't know what to improve on the pageSurfer.
- You need keyword, competitor and rank dataSemrush or SE Ranking.
- Tight budget, want an all-in-oneSE Ranking Core.
- Team needing broad research and several seatsSemrush, and budget for extra users.
- Want to track AI-search visibilitySurfer Standard.
Bottom line
Choose by the job, not the brand. Surfer improves pages, Semrush and SE Ranking supply research and tracking, and Search Console covers the basics for free. Start free where you can, and pay only for the bottleneck you actually have.
Frequently asked questions

Neither is better overall because they do different jobs. Surfer helps you write and optimise individual pages and, on its Standard plan, track your visibility in ChatGPT answers. Semrush covers keyword research, competitor analysis, daily rank tracking and site audits.
Can Surfer replace Semrush?
Not for research and tracking. Surfer focuses on the content of a page. If you need competitor data or daily rank tracking, you need an SEO suite such as Semrush or SE Ranking, or at least free Google Search Console.
